One Day Project

One-day project

We have been given a one-day project to produce a mock-up business card and compliment slip for a client.  We have to conduct research on the client come p with some ideas and develop these to create mock up for presentation to the client.
My client was Hannibal Lecter.
First initial thoughts were I knew about my client, but didn’t know what he was about or what he did.  I thought that initially this was quite a challenge, but it will be quite interesting to find out about the client and how I can tackle the brief
Research.
I started research using the Internet.  Initial research cover a lot of gruesome information about the client, which I though would make it impossible to created a brand almost for him.  But I started to look at the finer details fro he way he looks, his persona and the way he acts.
Initial ideas.

Through out research I came up with a lot of different ideas, from information I had gathered from research.
Scratch and Sniff Business Card – this idea stemmed from the characters sense of smells with is something that is highlighted through research.  I thought his would be a clever play on this.
Fold Out Business – His mask is the most recognisable object to the character.  I wanted the business card to be tactile, so I though about folding the mask shape in half, which almost looked, like a quote mark.  I would use a famous quote from the film.  At this stage the business cards is very mysterious, you ten open up the business card to reveal the mask and the connection is made.  This idea could be present through the whole o the stationary set through die cuts.
Development
I have started to develop the Fold out Business Card Idea.  I started by creating a mock up of the mask.  I need to play around with the shape to ensure that the idea of the quote mark is apparent without oozing the idea of the mask.  I have printed and mocked up different ways to this.

After a critique, it was decided that this idea under deadline would be too tight to develop. I would need to find a suitable typeface to create quote marks with the idea of the mask, which could mean I do not meet the deadline.  I thought of the other ways to use this idea but due to time would have been usable.  I decided to still focus on the mask, but the mouthpiece. The business card would use this has the focal point, this would be cut lout like on the mask.  This could reveal something inside which you could pull out.  I liked this idea, as the image in side is very unknown until you pull it out to see what it is. It playing with aesthetics and motives. Again I would use a quote from the film to work with the idea.

The compliment slip and letterhead can follow a similar idea.

Compliment Slip.

To develop my idea for the compliment slip I looked at the lists of quotes that I had and looked in to other sinister happening with the Hannibal lector stories.  I had chosen the quote “” to focus on so look at what would relate to this quote, Hannibal lecture escape form prison by cutting off his hands.  I feel this would work well with the quote.  I look at ways to represent this by looking severed hands, blood spatter handcuffs.  I decided too go with the hands cuffs as it explains what I’m trying to portray in a simple way.
I gathered imagery and edited with Photoshop.  I changed resolutions to combining imagery to create the final image that I would but in to my compliment slip.
I will carry through the typeface and style layout of the type in to the compliment that was used in the business card.

Letter Head.

To keep my letterhead design simple I used the die cut of the mouthpiece of the mask as the main design and will use a quote aging from the film to support this.

Overall I really enjoyed this project.  I liked how we had to work under pressure to produce ideas to present to a client if gives and insight to what it would be like in the real world. I think I produced some really good designs and the idea was so simple.  I think for other projects I may create my own deadlines to work at a quicker pace to see if this has any influence in my other design work.
