Sustainability - Logo Development

On developing the logo, I looked back at the initial ideas and started to see how I could use the brand within packaging products.  I could use the initial logo to illustrate the packing, which would almost eliminate the use of type or ink!! Imagery can easily be interrupted. I started to draw some initial ideas on this.  Here are some of the solutions I came up with.

Sustainability - Initial Ideas

On my ideas was look at revealing, unearthing, and looked at the idea of opening a present and revealing it.  I took the idea of a ribbon and realised it look like a Letter E.  I started to create ideas around this concept.  On discussion with peers, I decided to take this idea further to developed.  I also started to think about materials process that I would like to use.  I wanted there to be a certain look and fell to the brand, which would scream out sustainability in a modern way.  I started to think about laser cutting and deep embossing.  This allowed me to look at created an identity eliminated ink but exploring other material and processes.  I gathered a range of imagery on laser cutting.

On seeing this image, I could start to visualise how my whole brand would look.

I have started to think about how the brand would look if the logo was laser cut.  This process could be applied to all the design solutions to the whole brief.  And could fit I with my visual ideas of the whole brand.

Sustainability - Initial Thoughts

Ideas/ Research

I started my research by creating a series of montages to give me some inspiration.  I started to think about ideas but I had a mental block, which I felt stopped from thinking creatively.  Inspiration is what I need and created visual montages helps.  I created the montages on the works Pure, Unearthed and Inspirational Logos.

On creating these montages I started to design logo designs around the brand name Unearthed.  I look at the definition of the work and look at ways I could portray these visually.  Here are some of the initial ideas I came up with:

On these ideas I started to experiment with materials etc I gathered material in which I felt represent the word unearthed and started to take some of my initial ideas and make them out of different material from salt to coffee to cotton material.

Sustainability

From my briefing for my sustainability module, I have been given a choice of briefs to tackle.  Once a brief had been chosen I hand to start to think about initial ideas and approached to the brief and write a proposal.  Here is my proposal for my chosen brief:

Proposal
The brief I have chosen to take forward is the launch of a supermarket that sells quality foodstuffs and household products in an ethic and sustainable way.

Brand Identity
I want my brand identity to say sustainable is a modern way.  I want the logo reflect the meaning of my chosen brand name. I have chosen Pure and Unearthed, as possible brand names.  I will explore their meanings and gather imagery relating to them.  The imagery will allow me to look at colour shapes textures. I will also collect imagery of logos that I like to create an inspiration board.

Direct Mailer
My idea is to create a direct mailer, which can be used again, taking away the issue of junk mail.  The direct has been given a main objective but then another purpose.  I want the direct mailer to be constructed in a way, which allows it to become the free branding paper/ sack.  Hopefully, this will give the target audience the incentive to approach the supermarket, and start to think sustainable!! I will look at current examples of direct mail, explore their positive and negatives.

A free paper bag/sack, which is compostable
Currently we are seeing a lot of reusable solutions to supermarket bags, to promote reusing them.  Looking at current solutions, will allow me to explore materials, designs etc so I can create an idea of how I will look at design my bag/sack solution.  I need to explore material so that I can create a solution, which will allow me to produce my direct mail solution.

Packaging
Packaging is becoming more sustainable with companies such as Kenco leading the in change.  For my research I will look at sustainable packaging design, looking at currently solutions material etc.  I want to redesign the packaging of something which I feel is heavily over packaged and simple doesn’t need to be. I will gather two existing food packaging and a household product packaging, and will redesign them, to fit in within the new brand.  I will take part the packaging looks at how it’s over packaged, and will look to create a more sustainable solution from materials, amount of packaging used and the design of the packaging.

Throughout each of the design solutions, the brand will be carried over through shapes, colour palette, typography.  Hopefully this will create a recognisable brand to the target audience. First Impressions count to make a success.

Postage Stamp Brief

I have now developed my ideas for my Postage Stamp and My Stamp Book.  I have produced the design during two days, which was advised in the brief.  As it was a quick brief i didn't produce a lot of paper but tried to post as much of my development on my blog.  Here are the following final designs:

Postage Stamp Brief

I started my ideas by looking at how existing stamp books looks, especially the specially commissioned postage stamp designs.  I really like this layout and wanted to implicate a similar layout and style in my stamp book.

I used one of  the images i didn't used within my stamp designs,  The image uses a similar colour palette and style.  I wanted to use the texture of the material used to make the lantern for the basis of my stamp book.  But maybe a little more detail in the inside of the book.  i look at ways i could place my stamps also within the book.  I used the royal mail look within its guidelines for use which i found on its website. For the Royal Mail Logo Guidelines Please see the following link
